Acid peels break down the bonds that hold the dead skin cells together. This bond is called the intracellular cement. The speed and the depth of exfoliation is determined by the acid used, the concentration of the acid (pH), and the amount of time it is left on the skin. Once the skin is injured or “eaten away” in a safe and controlled procedure, it will begin to repair itself by flaking away the dead skin to reveal fresh new skin. If left in the hands of an inexperienced technician, severe burns and scarring may result. With the right prescription, the result will be glowing, younger, evenly toned skin. Age spots (melasma, hyperpigmentation, et cetera) will be lightened, and acne lesions healed. Each type of acid has a molecular size. The smaller the molecule, the deeper the penetration (glycolic being the smallest, the citrus the largest.) Result: Stimulating the fibroblast to increase collagen and elastin production.
*Beta-Hydroxy Peels (most commonly used: salicylic acid)
Good For: Oily and Acneic Skin Conditions. Similar to low strength AHA peels.
PROS: Best for fighting whiteheads, blackheads, clogged pores. Also recommended for fine lines, and wrinkles.
CONS: May be too harsh for dry-normal skin types. Has limited effects on epidermis because acid molecules cannot penetrate deep within the skin.
Skin may appear red, flaky, itchy and even shiny for the first few days. Sun sensitivity may increase, so sunscreen is strongly recommended.
(most commonly used: glycolic acid and lactic acid)
Gentle-GLYCOLIC ACID-Derived from sugar cane. Known best for ability to exfoliate, hydrate and rejuvenate skin.
**Recommended for: Oily and dry skin
Treatment of: fine lines, acne, scars, smoothing of rough skin, and some forms of rosacea.
PROS: Break down the keratolytic structure of the skin and influence the dermis to start producing hyaluronic acid and collagen. (Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the skin. We produce less of it as we age. It is a natural humectant and holds one thousand times its weight in water.) Result: soft, plump skin. It is the smallest in molecular size so it can penetrate into the skin better.
CONS: Can expect the skin to be pink and shiny. Increased photsensitivity.
Can by derived by fermented milk/naturally existing in the body. Has similar effects to glycolic peels but generally milder.
For: hydration, has lightening effect, and exfoliation.
PROS: A peel that works well with sensitive skin types including some types of rosacea MEDIUM and DEEP
Peels: TCA- Trichloroacetic Acid
Best For: Fair skin with hyperpigmentation, melasma
May be more than a week. Causes significant peeling and redness may occur. Should only be performed by an experienced physician. Phenol Peels- Best for: Deep lines and wrinkles and sun damage. Offers dramatic results because the peels are so deep. They are performed with anesthesia and doctor will prescribe pain medication to take home after your peel. Healing time: 2 weeks. Generally only performed once in your life. May cause a demarcation line on your skin, regardless of your skin type and skin tone. Remember*** The skin is the largest living organ. ALWAYS have a consultation with a licensed, experienced professional before having the treatment performed. Start out conservative to avoid hyperpigmentation. If a procedure is too aggressive, the skin will protect itself by producing more melanin. Skin that is more likely to form hyperpigmenation if the skin is 4,5, or 6 on the FITZPATRICK SCALE.
